Founder - Therapy-Informed Financial Planning
Hi, I’m Ed Coambs!
I’m a Certified Financial Planner™, couples therapist, and financial therapist with over two decades of experience helping individuals and couples transform their financial lives. But my journey here wasn’t exactly traditional.
I started my career as a firefighter, where I witnessed firsthand how financial communication could either strengthen or strain relationships. I later pivoted to financial planning, earning my MBA and CFP® certification, driven by the dream of empowering people to achieve financial stability and confidence. Yet, I quickly realized that technical knowledge alone wasn’t enough—money was deeply tied to emotions, relationships, and unspoken beliefs.
That realization led me to a second career in therapy, where I dove into relational science, couples counseling, and trauma healing. But I found the same gap there: no one was talking about how to help couples navigate their relationships with money.
So, I set out to bridge the fields of financial planning and therapy, earning a third master’s degree and helping to develop the Certified Financial Therapist designation. As a leader in the Financial Therapy Association and winner of their Practitioner of the Year award, I’ve spent over a decade refining this integrative approach.
Now, I bring this unique blend of expertise to my work, helping couples rewrite their financial stories and build stronger, more connected relationships. I created Healthy Love and Money to help couples dramatically improve their financial lives because when you stop avoiding the money talks and start having real conversations, your relationship and your future flourish.
How Therapy & Financial Planning Have Helped Me:
Financial planning first helped me understand how money works and how I could grow financial security for myself and my family over time. It laid a foundation for me that 25 years later has grown into a meaningful level of financial security and wealth. It started with investing $300 a month and has grown and changed over time into much more.Â
This financial journey has been marked by many of my own issues, including relationship conflict, my trauma history, major depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other difficult-to-manage family dynamics I had no idea how to navigate. Fortunately, through years of therapy and personal self-help work, I am proud of the family we have created and the wealth we now manage.
On A Personal Note:
My wife and I have been married since 2006. We enjoy our three boys and their many different activities. We also spend a good amount of time with our parents, enjoying family meals and trips.
When I have alone time, I love to ride my mountain bike in Charlotte or Western North Carolina.Â
My favorite drink at a coffee shop is a Chai Latte. Fun fact: I have never drank a cup of coffee in my entire life, even though coffee shops are my favorite place to write.
